Great North Run & the Millionth Runner Ceremony

The north’s most famous sporting event, the Great North Run, returns this weekend and this year’s race marks the milestone of the millionth runner to complete the world-renowned half marathon. To celebrate this momentous occasion organisers are hosting the Great North Run Million Ceremony featuring a host of north east showbiz royalty.

Dire Straits’ Mark Knopfler, Sting, Ant & Dec, actor Jill Halfpenny and Auf Weidersehen Pet’s Tim Healy are all due to play their part in the ceremony which will also include light installations and giant projections onto the side of the iconic Sage Gateshead building.

Tickets are still available if you want to be part of this special event, but be quick as they are very limited.

If you cant make it down to the Million Ceremony then why not get down and cheer the tens of thousands of runners on instead!

There are plenty of spots for spectators along the gruelling 13.1 mile route, which starts in Newcastle before making it’s way through Gateshead, Felling, Jarrow and them coming to an end in South Shields.

A little Van Mildert tip for those planning on making a day of it – head down to South Shields seafront where the atmosphere is always electric as the runners cross the finish line. You’ll also be able to explore the beaches, feast on fish and chips and relax in one of the many seafront pubs!

Good luck to everyone taking part in this year’s Run , and if you want some advice or tips then why not check out the blog by Van Mildet’s PR & Marketing Assistant, Claire Wall, on her first time running the Great North Run in 2013.
