It seems like just yesterday that I was sat here in the Van Mildert HQ optimistically typing away about the promise of Roy’s Boys ahead of their summer stint in Brazil…
Obviously things have changed since then. What most England fans assumed would happen - but hoped wouldn't happen –did actually happen, as we picked up just one solitary point from our three games and went crashing out of the tournament at the first port of call.
But nevermind, now we've got the Euro 2016 qualifiers to look forward to and our GB buddies Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are along for the ride as well - so let’s see how it’s all shaping up for the home nations:
England
After a far-from-promising 1-0 win over Norway on Wednesday night, England now have to face Switzerland (who you may remember did quite well in Brazil) in our first Euro qualifier. On paper it’s going to be the hardest opponent in the group (no disrespect to Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania, San Marino – I wouldn't put it past them to beat England at the minute), but Mr Hodgson needs to win the fans back sooner rather than later, and the best way to do that would be a convincing win.
Switzerland vs England - 8th September - KO: 19:45
Scotland
Strachan’s men have a mammoth task ahead of them in overcoming the world champions, Germany, when the two meet on Sunday night. A loss wouldn't mean disaster though, as they still have games against Poland, Georgia, Republic of Ireland and UEFA newcomers Gibraltar where the can pick up points. It goes without saying that the Scots will be up for a fight though, and with Germany losing 4-2 in their first game since winning the World Cup (both games against Argentina, funnily enough) they’ll definitely fancy their chances.
Germany vs Scotland - 7th September - KO: 19:45
Wales
With the attacking threat of one of the world’s best players, Gareth Bale, and the Premier League’s in-form man of the moment, Aaron Ramsey, Wales can be a force to be reckoned with on their day. Their qualifying group is a mixed bag though: Belgium and Bosnia & Herzegovina are the two teams who are capable of causing the Welsh most damage, while you would think they have what it takes to get the points from Cyprus and Andorra, who they play on Tuesday night.
Wales vs Andorra - Tuesday 9th September - KO: 19:45
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland are still on a mission to make it to their first ever European Championships, but they do have some memorable wins – such as beating Spain 3-2 in 2006 – from past qualifiers to give them hope. Their group contains Euro 2004 winners Greece, as well as Hungary, Romania and the Faroe Islands. Hard to say how that one will go, but with more spaces now available in the finals due to changes by UEFA, there’s more chance than ever of them making it.
