Sony Target Paul Feig To Direct New Ghostbusters Film

After much speculation and searching, it appears Sony are now focussing their attention on Paul Feig to take the helm of the new Ghostbusters project.

Although negotiations are yet to begin, it is understood the The Heat and Bridesmaids director is at the top of Sony’s shortlist after expressing an interest in the currently unnamed Ghostbusters project.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the film will not be a direct sequel to the 80s franchise, but will be completely reworked with a rumoured female-led cast. And as Feig has worked with Melissa McCartney on a number of movies some film buffs are predicting another collaboration between the director and actress, which has been met with a less than positive reception.

Ivan Reitman, who originally directed 1984’s Ghostbusters and the 1989 sequel, has stepped down from the top spot citing the death of Harold Ramis (Egon Spengler) and lack of interest from Bill Murray (Peter Venkman) as major factors in his decision. Reitman, however, will remain a part of the project in a producing capacity and is looking forward to “producing a movie with other people directing Ghostbusters and seeing the opportunity for new ideas."

It is alleged the latest script will introduce a new group of Ghostbusters having been passed the baton from at least one of the original proton pack-wielding members. Although, only Dan Akroyd (Raymond Stanz) from the original quartet has voiced his desire to be involved in the franchise’s third instalment. After years of hype and seemingly never-ending build-up, production of Ghostbusters’ triennial effort is set to commence in 2015 - we just hope it’s going to be worth the wait!
