In 1987, five young men, using brutally honest rhymes and hardcore beats, put their frustration and anger about life in the most dangerous place in America into the most powerful weapon they had: their music. Taking us back to where it all begin, Straight Out Of Compton tells the true story of how these cultural rebels – armed only with their lyrics, swagger, bravado, and raw talent – stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the world’s most dangerous group, N.W.A. And as they spoke the truth that no one had before and exposed life in the hood, their voice ignited a social revolution that is still reverberating today.
Coming together in 1986 the N.W.A. comprised of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, DJ Yella, Arabian Prince, and the late Eazy-E and were widely considered to have been among the earliest and most significant popularizers of the gangsta rap and West Coast hip hop.
Whilst some of the actors may not be household names a couple of notable inclusions are O’Shea Jackson Jr. who will be playing his actually real life Dad in the film Ice Cube, and UFC fight Tyron Woodley who will be playing rapper T-Bone.
It has been directed by F. Gary Gray who’s previous works include Be Cool, The Negotiator, Law Abiding Citizen, and the Italian Job.
It is released in the UK by Universal Pictures on August 28th, but you can watch a trailer of the film below.
