The End Of Year Review

How was 2017 for you?  Good, bad or indifferent it’s certainly been packed full of news, so take a look back with us, as we view the highs and lows of 2017 in the end of year review.

JANUARY
The year started with reality TV star Donald Trump being sworn in as the 45th US president, whilst Ed Sheeran became the first artist in UK chart history to debut in the top two positions in the same week in what was a truly staggering year for the singer-songwriter.

FEBRUARY
You would think it would be almost impossible to announce the wrong winner for Best Picture at the Oscars, but that’s just what happened when La La Land, and not Moonlight got the nod. Meanwhile there was a feel-good factor in football as little Lincoln City became the first non-league team to reach the FA Cup quarter finals in more than 100 years after they defeated Premier League Burnley.

MARCH
March saw the new 12-sided £1 coin released. Packed with a host of features, it was claimed to be almost impossible to counterfeit. There’s now about 2.2 billion in circulation. And speaking of billions, the highest grossing film of 2017 (Beauty and The Beast) was released. It went on to take over $1.2 billion at the box office.

APRIL
After much uncertainty and controversy Bob Dylan finally accepted his Nobel Prize for Literature, and became the first ever songwriter to receive the prestigious award. Also, Anthony Joshua stopped Wladimir Klitschko to become King of Heavyweight boxing, and Prime Minister Theresa May made what was to become possibly the biggest gaff of the year calling another general election.

MAY
Throughout the month of May it was hard to find a child (and many adults) that weren’t attached to a Fidget Spinner, as the craze swept the nation. We also said goodbye to James Bond actor Roger Moore at the age of 89, and to celebrate it’s 70 year anniversary, Italian sports car manufacturer Ferrari created its ‘Seeing Red’ gallery exhibition.

JUNE
In a packed month music took the centre stage as 22 million people tuned in to watch One Love Manchester, meanwhile Radiohead, Foo Fighters, and Ed Sheeran headlined Glastonbury. The England Under 20’s won the Football World Cup, the general election ended in a hung parliament, and the UK actually had an official heatwave… for 5 days!

JULY
The world of music was stunned as Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington lost his battle with depression, which once again brought into sharp focus mental health problems within society. Elsewhere the whole of the UK shed a tear as little Bradley Lowrey lost his courageous battle, but not before he raised millions of pounds for charity.

AUGUST
In the biggest (and most hyped) sporting event of 2017 boxer Floyd Mayweather took on, and defeated MMA fighter Conor McGregor to advance his record to 50-0 in the boxing match dubbed the ‘Money Fight’. August also saw the passing of TV legend Bruce Forsyth, and the rebirth of Taylor Swift with her album Reputation which went on to be Number 1 in 14 countries.

SEPTEMBER
September saw a monster Fatberg discovered in a London sewer, the great ‘Playboy’ Hugh Hefner pass away, and back from the beyond almost 70 years to the day since its birth, the iconic British sports car manufacturer TVR returned with one of its most-loved creations.

OCTOBER
As everyone’s favourite TV show Blue Planet returned to our screens after a 16-year hiatus with David Attenborough still at the helm, over in Mexico Lewis Hamilton became the most successful British F1 driver of all time as he won his fourth World Drivers’ Championship.

NOVEMBER
In a plan to attract new customers and increase growth Twitter gave us 280 characters to play with, just in time for us to Tweet about the engagement of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle, the passing of the great restauranteur Antonio Carluccio, and the leaking of the Paradise Papers.

DECEMBER
The main news on everyone’s lips as the year drew to a close was that Van Mildert launched its popular winter sale. With so many great reductions and some of the best bargains you’re likely to see on clothing, footwear and accessories, for men, women and children there has never been a better time to shop the sale!

Have a great 2018!
