Glasgow 2014 XX Commonwealth Games

Glasgow Commonwealth Games

This Wednesday the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will kick off in style with a massive opening ceremony planned at Celtic Park before Britain gets locked in a sports frenzy once again.

While including performances from Scottish performers Rod Stewart, Susan Boyle, Amy MacDonald, Julie Fowlis and violinist Nicola Benedetti, the opening ceremony will also include the Parade of Nations featuring all athletes and their coaches as well as the end of the Queen’s Baton Relay which has made the epic trip to every single Commonwealth nation and territory.

After that, 4,500 athletes from 71 commonwealth countries and territories will compete in 261 events covering 17 different sports in a total of 12 venues around the city over 11 days in the 20th official Commonwealth Games - gripping numbers.

The games are set to be severely packed full of action and we can’t wait to watch medals being won and lost in sports like aquatics, athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, judo, lawn bowls, netball, rugby sevens, shooting, squash, table tennis, triathlon, weightlifting and wrestling.

And, unlike in the Olympics, all of the home nations will be fielding separate teams which sets the stage for some heartfelt battles.

You can watch coverage of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games on BBC from July 23rd – August 3rd, or why not get yourself in the mood with the Dehli 2010 highlights, below.
