Since 1859 the Crabos family has been set up in the Landes region, the historic heartland of French goose and duck breeding, near the Pyrenees mountains.
The family collected feathers from farms and markets, until finally buying a sorting machine to sort the raw materials itself. The exceptional quality of the goose and duck down from the Pyrenees earned the brand a reputation on the most demanding markets around the world.
Most of all Pyrenex established the values of commitment, confidence and solidarity that forged the particular character of the company. And in a spirit of generosity created the first down jacket to protect prisoners from the cold during world war II.
1960 seen the first workshop for bedding accessories, comforters, pillows and garments filled with down and feathers. Since then Pyrenex moved into clothing and production was modernised and development alongside the popularity of bedding filled with down, 100% natural material with insulating qualities.
1968- The crabos family developed the manufacture of bedding articles at St Sever and started to develop sleeping bags. Pyrenex became the official name, evoking the region that lies against the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains.
1970- Jean- Pierre Crabos, and Louis Audoubert as technical adviser for Pyrenex created the first mountaineering jackets. Worn by Louis Audoubert who climbed in the Pyrenees and Himalayas, is known for his expeditions around the world.
The expertise acquired in bedding items enabled Pyrenex to design its first down sports articles. They started with sleeping bags, which were an instant success with hikers, mountain folk and lovers of the great outdoors. The quality of the Pyrenees down gives to Pyrenex sleeping bagsa high compressibility and very advantages weigh/insulation ratio.
1980- The Jackets initially designed for great expeditions were taken into the street. They became an essential item of the modern wardrobe. The Oisans, a cotton jacket with a distinctive contrasting leather yokes was a runaway success that made Pyrenex’s reputation. It was also this period that saw the arrival of the emblematic authentic, Spoutnic and Mythic jackets with bright colours, glossy fabrics, generous volume and incomparable comfort.
The very first Pyrenex jackets were essentially technical garments, designed to protect and insulate the wearer in the most extreme conditions.
