Just when you thought the footy season was over along comes the England team in the Euro Under 21 Championships. The young lions start as second favourites in a tournament they have won twice previously.
The squad went unbeaten throughout qualification, and join 11 other teams in the tournament in Poland that will run from 16th-30th June.
England have been placed in a group that includes the host country Poland, Slovakia, and the reigning European Champions of Sweden, and with only 1 team advancing automatically from each group qualification for the semi-finals will be tight.
England will be hoping to better than 2 years ago when they failed to make it out of a group that included Sweden – ironically the match between them in the group ended 1-0 to England, and was England’s only victory, and Sweden’s only defeat en-route to beating Portugal on penalties in the final.
It is though a tournament that England have won twice before, although this was back in 1982 and 1984 (as well as being runner up in 2009), and at a time when all the news in this country seems to be dominated by tragedy and suffering, here’s hoping Aidy Boothroyd and his young lions can bring back the trophy and some much needed happiness and good news.
