After GB's men's curling team's fantastic performance and silver medal today, the four medals won means we have matched our most successful Winter Olympics. However, with short track skater Elise Christie still to compete, we could well be talking about our most successful Winter Olympics performance of all time.
The women's curling team of Eve Muirhead, Anna Sloan, Claire Hamilton, Lauren Gray and Vicki Adams secured Team GB's third medal of Sochi 2014 after a 6-5 win against the Swiss and, almost matching the women, the men's curling team won silver in today's final. The four medal haul matches that of Great Britain's achievements at the very first Winter Olympics in 1924 in Chamoix, France.
The first of Team GB's medals came from Jenny Jones who snowboarded her way into the history books as Britain's first ever Olympic medallist on snow. The slopestyle star's win completes a remarkable story for Jones who has worked in a cardboard factory, a doughnut shop and a chalet to fund her snowboarding career. And, as all of Britain's previous 22 medals in figure skating, curling, skeleton, bobsleigh and more had been won on ice, we're super-happy Jenny Jones is bringing home our first medal on snow.
Britain's second Sochi 2014 medal came from Lizzy Yarnold who achieved gold after dominating the women's skeleton from day one and throughout. Competing in one of the most dangerous sports on the planet, Yarnold's gold meant Britain claimed the skeleton title for the second successive Winter Olympics following Amy Williams' gold in Vancouver four years ago. Unbelievably, Yarnold only took up skeleton six years ago after being snapped up by 'Girls4Gold', a purpose-built, X Factor-style program where exceptional sportswomen were chosen for sports in which the organisers believed they had the potential to excel in. Lizzy embarrassingly admitted that she had never even heard of the skeleton before joining the scheme and now she is an Olympic gold medallist. Well done, Lizzy!
Van Mildert would like to say a huge congratulations to all our medal winners - you've done us proud. We'd also like to thank all who've competed in what's been the best Winter Olympics ever.
